Rehabilitation
* Ground breaking for the El Garces
Hotel Rehabilitation project took place
on March 7, 2007. Project Manager
Allan Affeldt (center) unveiled the new
 hotel interior design, which includes
53 guest rooms, each with a private
balcony or patio, and a four star
restaurant and lounge. Above, Larry D.
Builder General Contractors Pete
Everett (L) and David Spak (R) talk to
Allan about the new enclosed
courtyard design.
* Affeldt stands in the center of the
original courtyard, in the spot where a
new fountain will be rebuilt. The
courtyard will be enclosed with a
glass roof to form a conservatory
* In April of 2007, load testing on
the loggia that surrounds the second
floor was performed. A combination
of water barrels and small pools
were used to place 160 psf of load
on the loggia. Sensors below
detected any deflection in the
structure. The load tests resulted in
less than .25" of deflection.
* While load testing was being
performed, Affeldt met with Bob
Dickens of the Robert Wellington
Quigley Architectural Firm (2nd from
R) and Shayne Rolf (far L) and Dan
Grammier (far R) of Lincolne Scott
Inc. (the mechanical, electrical and
plumbing consultants). This purpose
of the meeting was to finalize
schematic plans for the new El
Garces
*During the meeting, a scale model
of El Garces was used to discuss
the creation of a new glass roof for
the central courtyard
* By mid April 2007, nonstructural
demolition had begun on the
second floor. Here, a construction
crew member knocks the outer
edge of a cement wall away in
preparation for its removal
* By the end of April 2007, second
floor nonstructural demolition was
mostly complete. In this image,
original guest room doors are
visible to the right, with all the
walls separating the guest rooms
removed. The new guest rooms
will be much larger, with private
balconies and private bathrooms
extending out into the surrounding
loggia.
